Technical Parameters of Forest Road Pavements: A Case Study of the Przemków Forest District, Regional Directorate of State Forests in Wrocław

Abstract

Forest infrastructure requires solutions that improve road pavement durability and load-bearing capacity. These are critical for the effective functioning of forest roads under difficult terrain conditions. Using geosynthetics, such as geotextiles and geocells, enables the efficient reinforcement of pavement structures, which is particularly important in forest areas with challenging soil and water conditions.

The article analyses the technical parameters of pavement structures on four sections of forest roads located within the Przemków Forest District (Regional Directorate of State Forests in Wrocław). Three sections were constructed with a crushed stone subbase, while one incorporated geotextile and a geocell filled with gravel. The technical condition was assessed by conducting field inspections and measuring the load-bearing capacity with a lightweight deflectometer. The road structures were identified using technical documentation, and the current values of the dynamic deformation modulus were compared with the results obtained during construction acceptance tests.

The research results showed that the service life of the studied forest road sections does not significantly affect the load-bearing capacity of crushed stone pavements. At the same time, it was observed that applying geotextiles and gravel-filled geocells in the subbase layer significantly enhances the load-bearing capacity of forest road pavements. The findings confirm that the appropriate selection of technologies, including geosynthetics, contributes to the increased durability of forest road pavements, ensuring greater operational efficiency and longer service life.
