QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE OPTIMIZATION OF PROCESSING OF PINE WOOD IN THE MANUFACTURE OF BED FRAMES

Abstract

As a part of the research work, the material efficiency of pine lumber from the Notec Forest area intended for the production of continental bed frames was verified. One of the preferred methods of processing coniferous lumber into destiny friezes (semi-finished products), is transverse or longitudinal cutting into elements, with quality adapted to the strength requirements. These elements are obtained in the full dimension of the subassembly or are intended to be joined to length using butt joints. Acquired elements are sorted under quality tests determining the shares of quality classes with the separation of sorts in the strength classification KW, KS and KG according to PN 94021:2013. Each of the pine elements of the frame must meet the appropriate quality requirements, which requires optimization of sawn timber cutting not only based on maximizing the quantitative efficiency of the process, but also taking into account the quality demand. The quality of pine lumber for the manufacture of furniture components defines the achievement of the production goal. Quality throughput rates of pine lumber processing do not correspond to the fulfillment of the required assumptions of solid elements for production orders. An excess of inferior quality components is generated with a simultaneous shortage of higher quality components. The paper proposes a parameterization of the optimization process taking into account the throughput of pine lumber from a separate area of the Notec Forest, indicating a 68% fulfillment of order baskets and the feedback-based production of by-product elements. Such throughput showed a slightly lower-than-maximum material yield, while maximizing the quality yield for the final product.
