Competition for light between Beech tree and Black cherry in the first year of life of trees

Abstract

Background. Black cherry is an invasive species in Polish forests and competes for habitat resources, including with beech.

Material and methods. The aim of the research was to investigate the interaction between black cherry and beech in different light conditions and different mixing variants. It was assumed that beeches will be better adapted to growth in shaded conditions than black cherry, which will achieve an advantage over beech in full light. With more light, the black cherry will surpass the beeches. Tree heights, diameters and increments in variants without competition will differ from those with competition.

Results. Cherry was characterized by intensive growth in all lighting variants. Beech lost the competition for light with cherry in each variant. Beeches and black cherry had higher increases in single-species varieties than in combinations of the two species mentioned above.

Conclusions. The lowest growth in cherry was recorded in the variant with two beech seedlings, which indicates the possibility of using a beech pod to limit the growth of black cherry. Lighting, compaction and form of mixing influenced the growth of height and thickness of the studied plants.
