THE EFFECT OF TREE AGEING PROCESSES ON SELECTED PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF XYLEM IN SCOTS PINE (PINUS SYLVESTRIS L.)
Abstract
The paper characterized selected physical properties of wood from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) which grew in an overmature stand. The aim of the study was to analyse the influence of ageing on selected physical properties of wood. The empirical material was collected in three overmature pine stands located in the Łopuchówko Forest District (the Murowana Goślina Experimental Forest Institute), the Bolewice Forest
District and the Warcino Forest District. The choice of the research area was determined by the age of all forest stands, in which Scots pine trees over 150 years old dominated. In each forest stand three model trees were selected, which were harvested and samples for analyses of wood properties (i.e. density and water adsorption) were collected. The conducted analyses showed the influence of tree ageing processes on variability in the characterised physical properties of wood. The obtained results indicated a downward trend for wood density and an upward trend for water adsorption by the cell walls, once the tree has turned 70.
