The impact of age and height class on the diversity of measurement characteristics of European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) growing in a fresh broadleaved forest

Abstract

Admission. The paper presents characteristics of selected measurement features of European ash growing in a fresh broadleaved forest. The aim of the study was to analyze the impact of age and height class differentiation on the formation of breast height, tree height and slenderness of European ash.

Material and methods. The empirical material was collected on 9 surfaces of 25 ares each, representing the habitat type of fresh broadleaved forest, located on the area of the following forest districts: Babki, Konstantynowo and Łopuchówko. In the selected stands, ash had a diverse share in the stand composition. The location of the research area was determined by the dominance of ash in the selected part of stand. For height and breast height measurements, high trees were selected, with free apexes above the top canopy of the stand and trees with tops lying
in the main canopy level. In total, 135 trees of Europen ash were measured. Slenderness coefficient, basic statistical characteristics were calculated and two-factor analysis of variance was carried out due to the age and height class of the European ash.

Results and conclusions. The analysis showed a statistically significant differentiation of selected measurement characteristics of European ash depending on age and height class.

Keywords: Fraxinus excelsior, fresh broadleaved forest, tree height, breast height, slenderness.
