Snags, snapped and uprooted trees as elements of planning and harvesting in the Krasnystaw Forest District in the years 2006–2015

Abstract

Incidental fellings are harvesting treatments performed in the process of removing snapped and uprooted trees and snags. The paper analyzes data from the Krasnystaw Forest District (Lublin State Forests Regional Directorate) for the years 2006–2015. Planned and implemented incidental fellings were compared, and the results were sorted by tree species, timber class, and harvesting time (by quarter).

Incidental timber harvesting accounted for 0.8 to 19.2% of overall timber harvested (on average 8.1%). As many as 19 tree species were harvested. Timber harvesting was conducted as part of incidental final felling, incidental late thinning, and incidental early thinning. Pine and oak amounted to as much as 57% and 21% of the total timber volume. Medium-sized timber (with an upper diameter of 5 cm to 24 cm without bark) accounted for 3/4 of the total, with the rest being large-sized timber, mostly sawmill-grade of the lowest quality. Gradual transformation of tree stands to adjust the species composition to the site should reduce the magnitude of incidental fellings in the future. In addition, some dead trees, snags, and uprooted trees could be left for natural decomposition.
